Vehicle Donation Glossary
Plain-English definitions of the tax forms, title terms, and auction concepts behind donating a car. Every term written by someone who's processed real donations — no jargon for jargon's sake.
Form 1098-C
IRS form used to document a vehicle donation worth more than $500.
Fair Market Value (FMV)
The price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller — almost never used for vehicle donations.
Form 8283
Noncash Charitable Contributions form, required if total noncash gifts exceed $500.
Gross Proceeds
The actual sale price of the donated vehicle at auction — your deduction amount.
$500 Rule
If the vehicle sells for $500 or less, you can claim up to $500 without proof of the sale price.
Salvage Title
A title issued when an insurance company has declared a vehicle a total loss.

Your gross income minus specific above-the-line deductions; AGI sets the ceiling for charitable deductions.
