Smog Exemption
A waiver from emissions-testing requirements granted in specific circumstances.
What it means
Most states grant smog exemptions for: vehicles older than 25 years, brand-new vehicles, vehicles destined for salvage or out-of-state, and certain low-mileage scenarios. Donated vehicles often qualify. The charity's title processing handles the exemption paperwork; the donor does not need to obtain an emissions test prior to donation.
