Release of Liability

Notification to your state DMV that you've transferred a vehicle out of your ownership.

What it means

Most states require you to notify the DMV when you sell or donate a vehicle — usually within 5-30 days. This 'release of liability' (also called notice of transfer) removes you from being held responsible for parking tickets, tolls, accidents, or registration fees after the transfer date. Filing is usually online and free.
