Qualified Appraisal
Independent written appraisal required for noncash donations over $5,000.
What it means
If a single noncash donation exceeds $5,000 (rare for cars; possible for boats, aircraft, classic cars), the IRS requires a qualified appraisal from a credentialed appraiser. The appraisal must be performed within 60 days of donation. For typical vehicle donations under $5,000, no separate appraisal is needed.
