The IRS counts a vehicle donation in the tax year you transferred the title — meaning you signed the title over to the charity and the charity took physical or constructive possession. Pickup on December 28th counts for that tax year; pickup on January 3rd counts for the new year. For year-end donors trying to land a deduction by December 31st, scheduling pickup by mid-December gives a real safety margin.
Our pickup network runs through the holidays, but trucks are heavily booked December 15th–31st. The earlier you submit in December, the more likely you land a pickup before year-end. After December 26th we sometimes route to pickup the first business week of January, and any donor needing year-end timing should plan accordingly.
Why itemizers see the biggest benefit
The standard deduction for 2024 is $14,600 (single) / $29,200 (married filing jointly). To benefit from a vehicle donation deduction, your itemized deductions (state and local taxes, mortgage interest, charitable giving, medical above 7.5% AGI) must total more than the standard deduction. For donors who already itemize — homeowners with mortgages, high state-tax filers, regular charitable givers — adding a vehicle donation is pure additional savings.
For donors who don't normally itemize, a year with a vehicle donation might be the year. Add up your prospective itemized deductions for the year (including the vehicle donation estimate). If the total exceeds the standard deduction, itemize. If not, take the standard deduction and consider 'bunching' charitable giving into alternating years.
