Non-running car: yes, we still take it

Dead battery, blown engine, transmission failure, no fuel, key fob lost, sitting for years — these are all daily occurrences in our pickup workflow. Non-running cars are towed flatbed, not dragged. The driver winches them up using the front or rear tow points and secures them with chains. Your role: sign the title and step back.

We don't need the engine to start. We don't need the car to roll if the parking brake is seized — the winch handles that. We don't need to know exactly what's wrong, though general descriptions like 'engine seized' or 'transmission slipping' help our auction partners price the vehicle accurately, which can mean a higher sale price and a bigger tax receipt for you.

What non-runners actually sell for

Non-running 5-to-15-year-old cars in our auction pipeline typically sell in the $400–$1,800 range, depending on make/model/condition and how complete they are. Pickup trucks and SUVs run higher; small economy cars run lower. A complete non-runner with a clean title almost always beats a scrap-yard offer.

After sale, we issue your IRS Form 1098-C with the actual gross sale amount. You can deduct that amount on your federal tax return if you itemize. For non-runners selling at $500 or less, IRS rules also let you claim the fair market value (capped at $500) without extra documentation — your accountant can confirm what makes sense for your situation.

Common questions

What if the keys are lost?
Mention it during intake. For most non-runners we can still pick up — the towing partner can move a car without keys using a dolly or by neutral-rolling on a flatbed. Vehicles that need to be steered (manual transmission stuck in gear, locked steering column) may need locksmith service first.
What if the car is in pieces — disassembled, parts removed?
If the body, engine block, transmission, and wheels are all still attached we can usually take it. Stripped-to-the-frame cars or partially crushed cars: call us first with photos.
Do I need a battery in it?
No. Most non-runners get loaded with no battery, no key, and no working lights.
Will the lower sale price hurt my deduction?
Your deduction reflects the actual sale price. For sales of $500 or less, IRS rules let you claim fair market value up to $500 without further documentation — for most non-runners that's the practical floor.
