Donate a Car for Tax Write-Off

The short version: The tax write-off for a donated car equals the gross sale price of the vehicle (per IRS rules). Cars Helping Kids is a Georgia 501(c)(3); donations qualify for the federal charitable deduction if you itemize. Use the tax calculator on the homepage to estimate your write-off and tax savings before donating.

How the write-off math works

The IRS rule for vehicle donations valued over $500: your deduction is the GROSS SALE PRICE the charity receives at auction or wholesale. Not the Kelley Blue Book value. Not your estimate. The actual sale price. If the car sells for $2,800, your deduction is $2,800. If it sells for $750, your deduction is $750. For vehicles selling under $500: your deduction is the lesser of $500 or fair market value (Kelley Blue Book retail).

You'll get IRS Form 1098-C from us within 30-45 days of the sale, with the exact sale-price figure. Attach this to your tax return (or hand to your preparer) when claiming the deduction.

When the write-off is bigger than the sale price

Three special cases let you claim FAIR MARKET VALUE (the Kelley Blue Book value) instead of the sale price: 1. The charity uses the vehicle in its work (e.g., a Meals on Wheels org keeps the vehicle as a delivery vehicle). Our IRS 1098-C will indicate this. 2. The charity materially improves the vehicle (e.g., rebuilds the engine before selling). 3. The charity gives or sells the vehicle to a needy individual at significantly below market price. Some 501(c)(3)s have programs that do this.

Cars Helping Kids typically sells donated vehicles at auction (standard path); your deduction = sale price. We occasionally hold vehicles for the special cases above — when that happens, the Form 1098-C indicates and the donor gets the higher FMV deduction.

Itemizing vs standard deduction — the catch

You only benefit from the tax write-off if you ITEMIZE on your federal return. Roughly 88% of filers take the standard deduction since the 2017 tax law. If your itemized deductions (mortgage interest + state taxes + charitable + medical) exceed $14,600 single / $29,200 married-filing-jointly in 2026, itemizing makes sense.

If you're already itemizing, the car donation adds directly to your deductible amount. If you're not itemizing, the donation has no federal tax benefit (but you're still doing good for kids — donations welcomed from all 50 states).
