Donate a Car Without Keys

The short version: Lost the keys to your car? Stolen? Locked inside? Doesn't matter. We tow vehicles without keys using flatbed equipment. The lack of keys doesn't affect the donation, the pickup, or the tax deduction. We've done thousands of these.

Why no-keys cars are easy for us

Modern flatbed tow trucks don't need the vehicle to start. The vehicle gets winched onto the flatbed, strapped down, and driven away. No engine, no steering required.

We just need the parking situation to be accessible — the flatbed needs room to maneuver. If the car is in a garage, behind another car, or otherwise blocked, tell us when you book.

Title still required

While we don't need keys, we still need the vehicle title. If you've also lost the title, see our 'donate without title' page or call us to discuss state-specific options.

If keys went missing because the car was repossessed and the title is with the lender, that's a different situation — call us and we'll discuss.

Common no-keys scenarios

  • Inherited vehicle from a deceased relative who never gave you the keys
  • Kids took the keys and moved out 5 years ago and now have no idea where they are
  • Stolen keys (you have a duplicate? Bring it; if not, no problem)
  • Spare keys long-lost; primary key worn out
  • Vehicle hasn't moved in years and the keys have just disappeared

All routine. Call 770-871-9422, schedule pickup, we tow it without keys.

Yes. Cars Helping Kids accepts vehicles in nearly every donor situation including car no keys. Call 770-871-9422 to discuss the specifics; most edge cases are solvable with the right paperwork.
Will I get a tax deduction for donating in this situation?
Yes. Regardless of situation, your federal tax deduction equals the actual auction sale price on IRS Form 1098-C (or up to $500 under the safe-harbor rule for low-value sales). Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.

Standard: clear title in your name plus the vehicle. Additional paperwork may include: lien release (if past loan), death certificate + executor papers (if inherited), insurance total-loss letter (if salvage), or DMV duplicate title (if lost).
