Donate a Car After an Accident

The short version: If your car was in an accident and you don't want to sell or repair it, donating turns the salvage value into a tax deduction. We accept wrecked vehicles, totaled vehicles, salvage-title vehicles, and vehicles that have been declared total losses by insurance. Free flatbed pickup; you get IRS Form 1098-C for the sale price.

Wrecked, totaled, or salvage — we take all of them

Insurance companies often offer a low cash settlement for a totaled vehicle. Donating instead can be more rewarding (and sometimes financially comparable when factoring in the tax deduction). We accept vehicles after collisions, single-car accidents, flooding, fires, vandalism, and anything else short of completely crushed.

Salvage titles are fine. Rebuilt titles are fine. No title (because the insurer kept it) is fine — we'll work with you to get the paperwork sorted.

Insurance interaction

If your insurer has already paid out on the vehicle and taken title, you cannot donate it — the insurer owns it. If you've kept ownership (declined the insurance settlement, or insured for actual cash value vs replacement), the vehicle is yours to donate.

Common scenario: insurance offers $1,500 for your totaled car. You decline, keep the car. Donate it. We sell it at salvage auction for $2,000. Your tax deduction is $2,000. At a 22% federal bracket that's $440 in tax savings — for a net effective return of $440 plus the satisfaction of supporting a charity, vs the $1,500 cash from insurance.
