Donate a Car You Can't Afford to Fix
The math behind 'donate vs repair'
Mechanics often hand you a $2,500-4,500 repair estimate for a car that's worth $1,800. Paying the repair is throwing good money after bad. Donating gives you a clean exit + a tax deduction.
Example: 2007 sedan, needs $3,500 in transmission work. You decline the repair and donate. We tow it free, sell at auction for $1,400. Your tax deduction is $1,400 (at 22% federal bracket = $308 in tax savings). Net: you walked away from a $3,500 bill and gained $308 in tax savings. Worst-case wash — best-case ahead.
Common 'can't afford' situations
- Transmission needs rebuild or replacement
- Head gasket / engine block crack
- Major electrical failure (computer, alternator, starter all in cascade)
- Suspension or frame damage from a curb/pothole hit
- Failed emissions / unable to pass inspection
- Multiple systems failing at once on an older car
- Repair shop has had it 3+ weeks waiting for parts
- You owe more on the loan than the car is worth (talk to us — we can still help)
Bring us any of these. We don't judge the condition; we handle the pickup.
What about loans?
If you owe money on the vehicle (active loan), you can't donate until the lien is released. Two paths: (1) pay off the loan first, then donate; (2) sell the vehicle for enough to cover the loan and gift the remainder to charity (more complex). Call us if you're unsure.
If the vehicle is owned free and clear, no loan paperwork required. Sign the title to our towing partner; we handle the rest.
