Donate a Car That's Been Sitting for Years
What 'sitting for years' actually means for us
We see this constantly. A 2003 sedan that someone stopped driving in 2018, parked in the side yard, intended to fix 'someday.' Tires now flat, battery dead, paint faded, interior musty, mice in the air filter. All routine — we tow it and you get the deduction.
Flatbed tow handles flat tires and dead batteries (no need for the car to roll or start). Rust on the brakes from years of inactivity is handled at the auction yard — buyers know to budget for it.
Expected condition observations
Long-sitting vehicles typically have:
- Flat or dry-rotted tires (we tow with flat tires)
- Dead battery (no problem, flatbed)
- Stuck brakes (we use winches if needed)
- Animal damage — mice in air filter / wiring (very common; doesn't affect tow)
- Sun-faded paint (cosmetic; doesn't affect auction value much)
- Musty interior from moisture (auction buyers expect this)
- Stale fuel (auction buyers replace; not your concern)
None of this disqualifies the donation. The vehicle still has salvage and parts value.
Realistic sale price
Vehicles that have been sitting for 3-10 years often sell at salvage auction for $400-1,500 depending on year, make, and overall body condition. We tell you the realistic range when you book.
Even a 2008 minivan that's been sitting for 8 years and has all the issues above usually sells for $600-900. That's your tax deduction.
