Donate a Car Before Moving

The short version: Moving long-distance and don't want to drive an extra car? Selling a vehicle privately takes weeks of listing, calls, no-shows, and price negotiation. Donating is a 2-day process: schedule pickup, sign the title, vehicle gone. You get a tax deduction in lieu of sale proceeds.

Why donors moving choose donation

Selling a vehicle privately is a part-time job: photos, listing on multiple platforms, fielding lowball offers, scheduling test drives with strangers, handling cash or wire transfers, signing the title in person. The full cycle is 3-6 weeks for a popular vehicle; longer for niche or older cars.

Donation is a 24-48 hour process with us. Call → schedule pickup → sign title → vehicle gone. The tax deduction substitutes for the sale price. For many donors, the time saved + emotional simplicity beats the cash difference.

Timing for movers

Schedule pickup 1-2 weeks before your move date. We'll come earlier if you have a tight window. Most donors prefer to keep driving the vehicle until 3-5 days before the move, then schedule the pickup for the day before the moving truck arrives.

If you've already moved and the vehicle is at your old address (parked in a driveway, behind a friend's house, etc.), we can still pick it up — provide the address and access details.

Out-of-state moves

If you're moving from Georgia to California and want to donate the Georgia-titled vehicle, no problem. We handle the Georgia title transfer and your name comes off Georgia DDS records. Your CA registration is unaffected (it's a separate state).

If you've already moved and the vehicle is registered in your new state but titled in your old, call us — we'll walk through the specifics.

Frequently asked questions

Can I donate a car after car moving?
Yes. Cars Helping Kids accepts vehicles in nearly every donor situation including car moving. Call 770-871-9422 to discuss the specifics; most edge cases are solvable with the right paperwork.
Will I get a tax deduction for donating in this situation?
Yes. Regardless of situation, your federal tax deduction equals the actual auction sale price on IRS Form 1098-C (or up to $500 under the safe-harbor rule for low-value sales). Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.
What paperwork is required for car moving?
Standard: clear title in your name plus the vehicle. Additional paperwork may include: lien release (if past loan), death certificate + executor papers (if inherited), insurance total-loss letter (if salvage), or DMV duplicate title (if lost).
