2026 Trailer Donation Guide

Donate a Trailer — Free Pickup & Tax Receipt

Trailer donation in 2026 covers utility trailers, travel trailers, fifth wheels, livestock trailers, equipment trailers, and cargo trailers. Cars Helping Kids picks up free nationwide, sells at auction, and mails IRS Form 1098-C — your federal tax deduction. Title required in most states.

How to donate a trailer in 3 steps

  1. Submit trailer details. Length, type (utility, travel, livestock, equipment, cargo), single or multi-axle, GVWR if known, and ZIP location. Use our 60-second form or call 770-871-9422.
  2. Schedule specialty pickup. Trailers require the right tow vehicle. Our hauling partner contacts you within 1-2 business days to confirm pickup time. Typical pickup: 3-7 business days.
  3. Receive IRS Form 1098-C. Sale happens at auction or specialty wholesale within 30-60 days. Within 30 days of sale, Form 1098-C mails to you.

Tax deduction for trailer donation

Your federal tax deduction equals the actual auction sale price on IRS Form 1098-C box 4c. Most trailer donations fall in the $300-$3,000 range, depending on size, type, and condition.

  • $500 safe-harbor rule: if your trailer sells for $500 or less, claim up to $500 without further documentation.
  • $501-$5,000: file IRS Form 8283 Section A and attach Copy B of Form 1098-C.
  • Over $5,000: requires Form 8283 Section B and qualified appraisal. Rare but possible for large equipment trailers or premium horse trailers.
  • For the full IRS rules, see IRS Publication 4303.

Title requirements by state

Most states require a title for trailers above a certain weight (typically over 3,000 lbs GVWR). Small utility trailers may not have been titled in the original state of registration; in that case, registration history plus bill of sale can sometimes substitute.

If you have a trailer without a clear title:

  • Check your state DMV for a duplicate-title application (usually $5-$50, 1-3 week processing)
  • Several states (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas) have bill-of-sale workarounds for non-titled small trailers
  • If trailer was inherited, provide death certificate + executor paperwork
  • Call us at 770-871-9422 — most title issues are solvable in a 5-minute call

FAQ — trailer donation

What if my trailer is damaged or has flat tires?
Damage and flat tires are routine. Our hauler can air up tires or use rollers. Damaged trailers sell at salvage auction; the sale price will be lower but still tax-deductible.
Do I need to remove cargo first?
Yes. Please remove all cargo, personal property, and important documents from the trailer before pickup. Anything left in or on the trailer is typically discarded.
What about commercial trailers or 18-wheeler trailers?
Smaller commercial trailers (gooseneck, equipment haulers up to ~14,000 GVWR) are typically accepted. Larger 53-foot box trailers and tractor-trailers: call to evaluate case-by-case.
Can the trailer be donated with a boat or RV still on it?
Yes — see donate boat or donate RV for the combined donation. We typically value the whole unit together for the tax deduction.
How long does pickup take?
Typical trailer pickup is 3-7 business days from confirmation. Specialty haulers are scheduled separately from car towing, so trailer pickup may take slightly longer than car pickup.
