Accessibility Statement
Cars Helping Kids is committed to making our website usable by everyone — including people who use screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, voice control, and low-vision tooling.
Our commitment
We design, build, and audit carshelpingkids.org to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. We follow the spirit of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and treat accessibility as a non-negotiable part of every release.
What we've done
- Color contrast. Body text and interactive elements meet WCAG 2.1 AA minimum contrast (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text).
- Keyboard navigation. All interactive elements — donation forms, menus, accordions, modals, carousels — are reachable and operable with a keyboard.
- Focus visibility. Visible focus indicators on every interactive element.
- Semantic HTML. Heading hierarchy (h1 → h2 → h3) is consistent throughout. Landmark regions (header, nav, main, footer) are correctly marked.
- Form labels. All form fields have associated
<label>elements, with autocomplete attributes for assistive tech and password managers. - ARIA where needed. Modal dialogs use
role="dialog"with properaria-modaland labeling. Carousels expose previous/next controls with descriptive labels. - Image alt text. Informative images have descriptive alt text; decorative images are correctly marked
aria-hidden. - Reduced motion. Animations respect the user's
prefers-reduced-motionpreference. - Mobile-friendly. Responsive design from 320px viewport up, with 16px+ form field text to prevent iOS zoom-on-focus.
- Phone & text alternatives. Every page exposes 770-871-9422 for voice or SMS contact — so donors who prefer not to use the form can still complete the donation.
Known limitations
- Some legacy PDF documents may not be fully tagged. We are remediating these on a rolling basis. If you encounter a PDF you cannot use with assistive tech, contact us — we will send you an accessible version.
- The tax-deduction calculator widget is keyboard-operable, but screen-reader output of the calculated result is updated via an aria-live region. If you experience announcement issues, please report them.
Assistive technology compatibility
Cars Helping Kids is tested with current versions of:
- JAWS (Windows)
- NVDA (Windows)
- VoiceOver (macOS and iOS)
- TalkBack (Android)
- Modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge (latest two major versions)
