How to spot a fake car donation charity
Not every car-donation organization is a scam. But many are 'technically legal' charities that route 60-80% of donations to advertising, parent organizations, or for-profit middlemen. Here's how to tell which is which — in five minutes, with public records.
Red flag #1: the legal name doesn't match the brand name
Look up the EIN. If a charity advertises as a popular brand name but the legal entity is something different and the parent organization has a separate mission, that's a multi-layer structure that warrants closer inspection.
Not always bad — many real charities use d/b/a brand names. But it's worth understanding the full structure before donating.
Red flag #2: high percentage spent on advertising
Pull the Form 990 from IRS TEOS. Find Part IX (Statement of Functional Expenses). Look at advertising + fundraising as a percentage of total expenses.
BBB Wise Giving Alliance standard: at least 65% of expenses should be program-related. Below 50% is a red flag. Below 30% is a serious red flag.
Red flag #3: a religious or commercial parent organization
Some charities exist primarily to feed a parent organization with a different mission. Schedule R of the Form 990 lists related organizations. If the parent has a different focus than what the public-facing brand suggests, donors deserve to know.
This isn't illegal — it's a transparency issue. State Attorney General actions in this category have generally targeted exactly this kind of gap: marketing language that doesn't match where dollars actually flow.
Red flag #4: state AG actions in the public record
Most state AGs maintain a charity-registration database. Search for the charity by both brand name and legal name. Past enforcement actions, settlements, or revocations appear here.
Specifically check: California Registry of Charitable Trusts ('May Not Operate or Solicit' list), Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations, Minnesota AG charities database, Florida Department of Agriculture Solicitation of Contributions registration.
Red flag #5: vague impact reporting
Real charities can answer 'who benefits, how many, doing what, where?' with specifics. Vague answers — 'children's programs across America' or 'veterans services nationwide' — without named programs, beneficiary counts, or geographic specifics are a warning sign.
Annual transparency reports, named program initiatives, and audited financials are positive signals. Their absence isn't proof of problems, but it's worth a follow-up question.
Red flag #6: pressure tactics or excessive 'gifts'
If a charity offers significant gifts in exchange for a donation (vacation vouchers, valuable merchandise, cash rebates), the IRS treats the gift as reducing your tax-deductible amount. Some charities use these aggressively to incentivize donations regardless of where proceeds go.
Always read the fine print: what's the gift worth, and how does that change your deductible amount? Form 1098-C requires the charity to disclose 'goods or services' received in exchange.
Green flags: what a transparent charity looks like
✓ Legal name and brand name match (or d/b/a relationship is disclosed)
✓ Form 990 publicly available and easy to find on the charity's own website
✓ Independent watchdog ratings (Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, Candid Seal of Transparency)
✓ Specific named programs with measurable outcomes
✓ Annual report or transparency report published
✓ Local mission with verifiable beneficiaries
✓ No state AG actions, no active lawsuits, not on any state's revocation list
✓ Lowest reasonable overhead — clear that money reaches programs

1. IRS TEOS lookup → confirm 501(c)(3) status, find legal name, find EIN.
2. Charity Navigator search → see overall rating and accountability score.
3. Candid (GuideStar) → look for Transparency Seal (Bronze / Silver / Gold / Platinum).
4. State AG database → search for actions in your state.
5. Read the charity's most recent Form 990, page 1, summary financials.
